Join us as we continue our Seven Principles Sermon Series with an exploration of the 6th Principle: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. It’s also UN Sunday.
Our speaker is Dr. Elliot Ratzman, visiting Assistant Professor in the Theology and Religious Studies Department at St Norbert College, and Visiting Fellow in Jewish Studies at Lawrence University. He completed a Masters of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School and a PhD in “Religion, Ethics, and Politics” from Princeton University.
Dr. Ratzman will give us an overview of how the rise of anti-immigration politics in the US, Europe, and elsewhere can be partially attributed to economic insecurity, but also to resurgent religious prejudices. The history and sociology of the State of Israel–its creation, its migrants, its ethnic violence–provide a cluster of case studies illustrating the dangerous intersection of religion, race, and national identity. Drawing universal lessons and cautionary tales from the particular case of Israel, we will consider how to work for peace and justice in our own American context.
